Teaching Speaking skills to Grade 4 students at Tan Tao Primary School Binh Tan District: Master's Thesis

Abstract

This study examines how task-based learning facilitates students' English speaking skills at a language center in Ho Chi Minh City. We aim to determine whether group and solo activities make English speakers more proficient in everyday communication. Our research was divided into two main components. I collected data from forty students and four language teachers through a questionnaire consisting of yes-and-no questions. The questionnaire included short words like "I am a good student" with a yes option, and either A or B options with no yes-or-no answer. I also observed students participating in activities in a large classroom setting, where they sat on their legs with one leg slightly raised. Additionally, students completed written statements about their experiences. I observed that students improved with everyday practice. I noted that some students lacked knowledge of common words, and time constraints posed a problem. However, other methods used in this task helped alleviate these issues in this particular group. My findings suggest that language lessons could be more engaging. It appears that some learners struggle to find sufficient time or know English words they should use. I propose improvements to teaching and learning how to speak English in the future to provide better English instruction. I have compiled a report with suggestions, and further information would be beneficial in enhancing speaking skills to enable learners to understand.
